Benefits of Balance Training for Skateboarders

Balance is more than "not falling"

On a skateboard, balance is several things working together:

  • Static balance: holding a stable stance while rolling, or standing on the board at rest.
  • Dynamic balance: staying centered while the board moves, tilts, and vibrates underneath you.
  • Proprioception: your body's sense of where your feet, ankles, and hips are without looking. It's why experienced skaters can feel a wheel start to lift.
  • Reactive stability: the tiny corrections your ankles and core make before you consciously notice you're off-center.

Most of that work happens in your ankles, calves, and core, and it's where riders tend to plateau. You can't practice the same wobble a hundred times on demand, and every failed attempt costs you a fall.

Balance is extremely important in skateboarding. It is the skill that allows riders to control themselves and their skateboards while riding. Without good balance, executing tricks and high-speed maneuvers becomes virtually impossible and just the act of propelling the skateboard can become dangerous.

Skateboarders encounter all sorts of obstacles when riding, including rough surfaces, uneven terrain, drop-offs, bumps and debris in the road. They need to be able to continuously adjust their body position, the angle of the board surface, and the way they are applying force to the board while maintaining their upright posture. None of that happens without good balance.

Why off-board training helps

The best way to build balance is repetition in a low-consequence setting. That means lots of small wobbles and corrections without the pavement, the bruises, or the wait for the next good session. Off-board balance work gives your stabilizing muscles more practice reps per week than skating alone can.

That's where a balance trainer like the SlackBoard Plus fits in.

Enter the SlackBoard Plus

The SlackBoard Plus is a compact wooden balance board with a slackline-style surface. It can go from a double-line to a single-line setup, so it adapts whether you're building stability, recovering from an injury, or staying active at a standing desk. That flexibility makes it useful across skill levels.

Start with two lines. The dual-line option gives extra support for beginners, kids, and rehab. The two-line setup is a good place to build a stable base and get used to the feel of an unstable surface. Work on staying centered, keeping your knees soft, and shifting weight without stiffening up.

Progress to one line. The single-line setup challenges your balance and coordination. A single line demands much more from your ankles and core, and it's the closest thing to the constant micro-adjustments of riding rough pavement or holding a manual.

Because the board sits low to the ground and your foot stays close to it, it's easy to restart after you lose balance. That makes it a forgiving way to practice, so you can attempt more, fail more, and improve faster.

The GIBBON Balance Board is a great tool for training balance for skateboarders because it is both safe and effective. It is safe because there is almost no momentum involved in balancing on the SlackBoard line, the board is stationary, and the line itself is very close to the ground, all of which minimize any risk of falling. It is effective because the line provides instant and granular feedback on balancing in every three-dimensional plane and is extremely challenging to master. It is an ideal platform for teaching the brain to keep the body aligned while leaning forward and rearward in a skateboarding position. It also enables advanced skateboarders to use carpet boards (skateboard decks with the wheels and trucks removed) on the line to practice difficult rail-based maneuvers, effectively using the SlackBoard line as a rail and the carpet board as a skateboard. This is particularly effective because it permits practicing difficult and dangerous tricks much more safely.
